The map had to be reasonably accurate yet still have a hint of style reflecting the period the book is set in (1500s). Buildings representing several towns the protagonist visited needed to be included, and they had to be correct for c.1500.
Note: this was an initial run-through of the map. A later iteration had details added to Ireland, and some design tweaks.")

They needed a logo that showed the skyline of Columbus, Ohio, with lights hanging above it. I designed a logo that would work both on a white background and a dark color, including distinctive features such as a city bridge and unique buildings that would be instantly recognizable.")

The client wanted something representing the Pineapple Express - it had to show a family meeting up with US military personnel, in the dark, as they escaped Afghanistan. The setting was the canal near the runway at Kabul airport. The father is holding up a cell phone with a pineapple symbol on the screen for the soldiers to see.
The painting is to be printed out at 36\" x 20\" and framed, then auctioned at a fundraiser.")

I mimicked the overall shape of a food plate, keeping the logo contained into a highly versatile tidy circle. The logo works in one color, and in several.")

I chose an abstract wave, inspired by Polynesian art, with bold attention-grabbing colors. It added visual movement to the top of the shoe, and accentuated the flow shown in the sole cut outs.")

A neutral tree design, in a calm welcoming shade of blue, evokes feelings of trust and positivity, and I chose a flexible one color design so it will work on all background shades. The logo is simple enough to be read at small sizes, and visually pleasant enough to be made into large signage.")
