That was the point. In the story, black feathers mark where a spirit has passed, an omen Annie can't stop noticing once she starts looking. The raven's gaze needed to carry that same feeling: something ancient and aware, watching back.
I kept the palette almost entirely black and charcoal, letting only the beak and eye catch light, with a single deep red for the author's name as the one warm note in an otherwise cold, watchful cover. The elegant serif title stays quiet and literary rather than dripping with horror clichés, trusting the raven to carry the dread.
The result feels intimate rather than distant, a ghost story you can't look away from.")

I built the cover around one confident image: a warm gold crescent moon rising from total black, textured enough to feel tactile rather than decorative. Behind the title, a faint trace of sacred geometry floats in the dark, present enough to signal ritual, quiet enough to stay out of the way.
Black as the dominant color was deliberate. It reads premium and authoritative rather than mystical-soft, giving the spiritual concept enough weight to sit next to words like \"strategy\" and \"success\" without feeling like two different books stitched together.
The result speaks to agents who want to bring intuition and ambition both into how they build their business.")

Deep brown leather texture, gold foil detailing, and a hand-drawn border frame the cover the way a classic, well-worn book of principles would look on a shelf. At the center, a lion stands calm and upright rather than roaring or mid-attack, regal instead of ferocious, echoing the book's real message: mastery through discipline and grit, not aggression.
The gold-on-brown palette carries weight and timelessness, positioning this as a guide meant to be studied and returned to, not a quick sales-tactics pamphlet. Every choice here serves one idea: influence as a classical, lasting skill rather than a hustle-culture trend.")

So instead of designing what an adult thinks looks approachable, I built the cover the way this exact age group actually decorates their own stuff: a sticker bomb of retro game controllers, tacos, cartoon mascots, all in neon cyan, magenta, and lime against black.
I hid a small joke in the chaos: a sticker reading \"THEY'RE IS OVER THERE,\" misusing the very words this book teaches. It's a detail meant to be found, not announced, a wink for anyone who looks twice.
Every sticker shares the same neon palette family, so despite the density, it reads as one curated collection rather than random clipart. The title punches through in bold rounded type with a glowing outline, staying dominant even inside the noise.
The goal wasn't to look educational. It was to look like something a kid would actually want to pick up.")

The Marshal stands calm, rifle resting on his shoulder instead of drawn and firing. A man mid-shootout says danger right now. A man standing still, staring at a house in the distance, says he's sizing something up. That's the real story: a lawman investigating, not one under attack.
The plantation house sits small, glowing against a warm yellow sun, right where his gaze lands. It's not competing with him, it's the reason he's there.
Since the story is set in fall, I built the palette around red-orange, yellow, and rust-brown. No cold tones. It needed to feel like dusk in October.")

The lighthouse became the emotional anchor. In a story about learning tools to navigate pressure rather than avoid it, it needed to feel like guidance breaking through chaos, not rescue from outside, but clarity built from within.
Bold, distressed collegiate type in the client's signature red kept the title readable and on-brand, while the diagonal bat added motion and grounded the concept back in her sport.
Chosen by the client after multiple rounds of testing, this became book one of a planned trilogy.")

Everything else stays in shadow, the pews, the walls, the space itself, so the eye is pulled straight to that light the way the characters are pulled toward the mystery hidden inside the building.
The gold title sits against that darkness like something catching a last bit of illumination before it fades, echoing the story's own race against a closing window of time. The palette stays deep and reverent rather than horror-leaning, since this is a mystery about faith, history, and old friendships, not a scare.
The result aims for spooky without losing warmth, a church that feels sacred and unsettling at once.")

That imbalance is the point. After a journey spanning years and light-years, the story's real weight lives in that quiet, human-sized moment of confronting the unknown.
A scattered convoy of ship silhouettes crossing the starfield above hints at the larger colonization story without crowding the main scene. Deep blue-black space against warm, dangerous orange creates tension between the awe of discovery and the threat of what's actually been found.
The title stays clean and unembellished, letting the planet carry the drama instead of competing with it.")
