"We’re former Microsoft product and engineering professionals with experience collaborating across disciplines, including with designers. For a new product concept, we created a detailed Brand Guidelines specification—including references to existing brand systems—and outlined the need for 23 custom icons aligned with the brand identity. The designer reviewed and approved the brief before starting work.
However, the execution fell short of expectations. The quality of the output was underwhelming, and midway through the process, the designer began pushing back on the agreed-upon scope. The final brand guidelines lacked core elements we requested—such as font and color usage rationales, UI component examples (buttons, forms, inputs, layouts), and illustration guidance. Instead, he included assumptions like social media placement examples, which were not relevant to our immediate needs, and resisted including more useful contexts such as pitch decks, website hero sections, or app UIs.
Additionally, the icon work was limited and misaligned with the spec. It was clear that the designer did not invest time up front to clarify requirements, nor did he deeply engage with the creative needs of the project. Overall, the work felt rushed and surface-level—focused more on checking boxes than delivering a thoughtful, high-quality design system."
