"Two projects with this designer. The logo contest delivered a crest I liked - good work, and the reason I rehired him. The packaging direction round failed on the agreement, not on taste. He received a detailed written brief with binding terms, a full reference pack (engineering line views, 360-degree renders, photos, film, and the product's exact silhouette as vector files), and a paid 200 USD direction round with the test piece fixed in advance: one flavour illustration at finished quality. In five days he asked not a single question, then delivered at the very edge of the deadline four boards built on one formula - my existing logo centered on black with stock-style ornament. The brief's binding type hierarchy was reversed on every board; the required illustration was absent; the product's geometry appears nowhere - a generic castle clip-icon stands in for the silhouette he was given as vectors - and one concept was character-style illustration, which the brief excluded in its most emphasized paragraph. The level was comparable to what free AI tools produce in minutes; I hired a designer precisely for what AI cannot do. He claimed he had spent real time and effort on the project - the work does not show it at all, and the five days of total silence are their own evidence: a designer genuinely reading these briefs, studying that reference pack, and working this project could not have zero questions. In his own reply he acknowledged the brief had felt confusing to him - which makes the silence worse, not better - and admitted he should have presented the direction I requested and had not. To his credit, he ultimately accepted the decision and apologized. I paid the direction fee in full and stopped at the staged gate our agreement provided. A capable logo designer; I cannot recommend him for consumer product packaging."
