This design was a layout proposal and was never published.
My approach was connected with the book's purpose: to be a “gift” for mothers such as Mother's day or their birthday.
Gifts have the objective of making people we care about feel appreciated. So, why not to “wrap” the book to make it look exactly like a gift? This way the intention of sons/daughters is perfectly clear and “visible”, and the joy of moms by receiving it can be even stronger. They would feel that they didn’t just receive a book… but a deserved “gift”.
My idea was also to create a design style that could be suitable for all the ages. With this idea the book can be an offer for a mom with a newborn baby, as well as to an elderly mother that receives this gift from her already adult sons.
As the client requested, I also had in mind that the design should be easily adapted to other members of the family: dad, grandma, grandpa… The idea of “the gift” can be continued, changing colors and some of the elements.
