To mark the 100th anniversary of Surrealism, 99designs by Vista has worked with its global community of professional freelance designers to reimagine some of today’s most influential brands in this iconic and unflinching artistic style.
Surrealism pushes the boundaries of reality, forcing us to consider alternative, and often unexpected, perspectives. This makes it a powerful visual tool for exploring contemporary social issues, and even a century after the first Surrealist manifestos were published, the movement continues to inspire and resonate with creatives today.
Just as Surrealism emerged from the aftermath of a completely altered post-war, post-pandemic Europe in the 1920s, there are parallels with the ongoing geo-political conflicts and technological advances that have transformed today’s cultural landscape. With the promise of increased digital disruption thanks to AI, increasingly polarized world views and ideologies, and more accessible global dialogue happening on social media than ever before, Surrealism is a style well-suited to exploring the realities of our shifting social fabric.
“Surrealism challenges widely accepted conventions, encouraging creativity, but also critical thinking and a healthy skepticism towards the curated realities often presented in society - particularly online and in social media,” comments 99designs by Vista CEO, Patrick Llewellyn.
“The talent and creative execution shown by our designer community has been incredible, with artists from 17 countries participating in this project. In a time of digital saturation and (mis)information overload, this project shows how Surrealism's push for authentic expression and escape from the status quo remains profoundly relevant for designers and communities around the world.”
